A worldwide group of 27 scientists have also called for the search for an attenuated strain:
On the whole, the current global crisis is of a magnitude such that it is feasible to identify currently existing attenuated SARS-CoV-2 variants and assess their prevalence.
Such an effort will be instrumental to better understand the evolution of SARS-CoV-2 as it spreads among humans, and, therefore, to predict the dynamics of the current, and possibly also future pandemics (13).
Knowledge of SARS-CoV-2 attenuation might also have relevance for developing safer and more effective anti SARS-CoV-2 vaccines.
